And certainly, regular use of MDMA will create physical and mental damage. It might take a while to show up and there’s a couple of reasons the user might not even realize what damage they have experienced. In the Schultes era, researchers would sometimes become test subjects and ingest plant compounds themselves. But today, these plants will undergo DNA sequencing before they’re tested on human skin cells that are reprogrammed into stem cells — and ultimately coaxed into brain cells. “It’s a great example of the fact that over time our societies tend to normalize psychedelic and psychoactive plants,” Haggarty said. “We can even walk through the Boston Common and identify some of these plants.”

Then, it was most often distributed at late-night parties called “raves”, nightclubs, and rock concerts. There are currently no FDA-approved medications to treat ecstasy addiction.

List 1 might be thought of as the ‘hot as hell’ list of suspicious precursors, like safrole and psuedoephedrine. By itself (with no evidence that you plan to make illegal drugs) it’s not a crime to have a gallon of sassafras oil or some red phosphorus. If you can find somebody willing to sell you either (within the US) you aren’t doing anything illegal by buying them. Instead, the law applies to importers, manufacturers, and distributers. It is illegal to produce, import, or sell List 1 chemicals without the proper government permits and documentation. So, it’s legal for you to have sassafras oil (which is regulated as if it was pure safrole.)  However, you aren’t allowed to import or sell it or make your own without a permit.

Now, Haggarty is continuing Schultes’ research, pouring over documents and the work of Schultes’ students. He has already identified more than 50 psychedelic plants used by shamans and other healers that have never before been studied in a lab, and that he thinks show promise for psychiatric conditions. The scientists, from the hospital’s Center for the Neuroscience of Psychedelics, are examining how compounds in these plants interact with the human nervous system.
